Dear Diary,
Cyprus, compared to Rhodes, according to Ilias "is what Greece could be if they played their cards right". What do I have to say on the subject? I'm still figuring that out.
I've found an interesting outlook here in Cyprus and how composed they are economic wise stands out compared to its neighboring islands. An island taking advantage of its geopolitical position considering the fact that big boi Turkey is right across the isle yet becoming an up-and-coming locale that has background in tourism and now, hydrocarbons, is amazing.
The old city is another story in itself. You have a whole entire city on the cusp of a U.N. sanctioned buffer zone where nothing has been touched since the 60's-70's; cups of coffee still with coffee in them, shattered glass, Nature reclaiming her rightful throne, old phone numbers that no longer work. That's what we were told was there anyway.
We saw the old airport in the abandoned disputed zone however. Nicosia International Airport. Brutalist architecture, once a place of hustle and bustle and an important point of entry for business. Dead as a doornail with the "I wish I were there" aftertaste. The history here in Cyprus is really something to be admired and I'm still trying to digest it all. There are individuals who grew up with remnants from the war in their backyards; there are unexploded grenades in the dead city. The clash of the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, the former taking things so seriously and aren't even acknowledged fully by their own countrymen and the latter who want unification and seek an end to this long-winded staring contest.
I have more to chew on.
Love u.
