After our hike across the Samaria Gorge, we had a
round table discussion with the European Union Communication commission’s
coordinator for fishing and marine life.
We talked about the issues in the Mediterranean of the finite amount of
fish that we are extracting and how we will eventually run out. Tina described this issue to us because the
European Union implements environmental and economic quotas to preserve the
marine life. I was most interested at
the brief point she mentioned of how many species of fish are migrating north
due to climate change which has a drastic effect on the Mediterranean fishing
industry. One other topic which Tina
mentioned was how the northern Mediterranean states have stable political and
economic structures which establish environmental regulations, while the
southern Mediterranean is not worried at all about the environment. This is mainly due to the failure of states
in the southern Mediterranean. Altogether,
Tina suggested that a certain amount of cooperation must be established in
order to keep the fishing industry thriving for years to come.
