Philoxenia-June 4, 2019

We are less than a week into the program, and the amount of hospitality we have received has been incredible. There is something different about the way guests are treated in Greece compared to in America. On Friday, we went out to eat at a local restaurant where we just ordered some drinks. However, in Greece, there is no such thing as "just some drinks." The waiter brought us our drinks and then proceeded to bring an array of dishes: fava, salads, meat, and potatoes. We could hardly finish our meal. As if bringing us all that food was not enough, the waiter then brought us plates of loukoumades, a traditional Greek-styled fried dough, and raki, a Cretan drink similar to ouzo. Everything was delicious, and a simple thank you was not enough for all that we had received. The waiter made sure to pour a shot of raki for himself as well and we all drank "στην υγεια μας," in other words, we drank to our health. This is a scene I do not expect to see in any American restaurant. Whether you've known someone for years, or if you just walked into their restaurant for the first time they will treat you like family.
